A Moth's Life

Everybody says a butterfly
looks so pretty as it flutters by
but fancy colors aren't so great
for a moth gets to stay up late.

I like being a plain old moth
dressed in my grays and browns
nobody pays much attention
as I flit around the town.

I go out hunting candle flames
on a warm midsummers night
or stop by my favorite closet
where a wool sweater tastes just right.

Yes, a moth's life is really quite easy
mostly just flying around
so put on a pair of comfy moth wings
and I'll show you my hometown.

Ol' Snip-Snip Samson
owns the town barber shop
lots of hair covers his floor
but not much hair on his top.

A tired cat named Snooze
naps in the back of the store
you might think he is sleeping
but he watches each hair hit the floor.

Come inside for a closer look
listen to the scissors snip-snip
tickle the cat's long whiskers
that grow just above his top lip.

Oh yes, a moth's life is really quite easy
mostly just flying around
catch hold of a breeze if it's breezy
and visit some folks in the town.

Down the block is the post office
Carrier Carol she comes and she goes
her job is fun and it's easy
except when it rains or it snows.

Carol takes letters to each house
she walks for miles and miles
says good day to Mrs. Jones
and gives her one of her smiles.

Sometimes a moth licks a stamp
or bites on a juicy loveletter
they taste pretty good but not nearly as sweet
as a high school letter sweater.

Yes, a moth's life is really quite easy
mostly just flying around
so strap on a pair of comfy moth wings
and I'll show you my little town.

Under the bright red awning
is Cloth Brothers Clothing Store
Mr. Cloth takes a short quiet nap
everyday just about four.

When he closes his tired gray eyes
I silently head for the back
a stack of green sweaters awaits
a chance for a good healthy snack.

Between nibbles and nibbles
I look forward and back
if Cloth wakes up early
my good health ends with a smack.

Oh yes, a moth's life is really quite easy
mostly just flying in town
it lasts longer if I'm careful near flames
and always keep looking around.

I love to go to the library
go every chance that I get
ride on someone's shoulder
so in the door I can slip

Books tell stories of bright lights
and the whispers of candle flames
They remember the glow of lanterns
on forgotten oldtime trains

There are books for every taste
but books I never will eat
for looking at words and pictures
is one of life's most special treats

I must say goodbye for today
I will see you again soon I know
to show guests around my nice little town
gives my wings a healthy glow

Yes, a moth's life is really quite easy
time to read and time to snack
spin around a light bulb twice
once going forward and once going back
